Arundinaria
A mostly Asian bamboo with the exception being our one and only native bamboo. This genus is slightly less cold hardy than Phyllostachys but otherwise similar. Arundinaria gigantea once grew in expansive canebrakes from Maryland south to Florida and west to Missouri and south to Texas. It's believed that the mass clearing of these canebrakes resulted in the extirpation of the Carolina parakeet, Passenger pigeon and the Bachman warbler. Our conservation efforts with this bamboo focus on the Texas subspecies tecta.
