Chusquea is a clumping bamboo native to Central and South America. This genus comprises some of the most beautiful bamboos available but are problematic in several ways. Many species are very cold tolerant but cannot take hot summers so are difficult to grow in the South and Midwest. The few species we have found that will take warmer summers are generally sensitive to any cold. The species we have had some success with include circinata, coronalis, liebmannii, and pittieri. They are worth experimenting with.
